Apple is preparing to replace its familiar voice-first assistant with a full-fledged chatbot. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 27 will introduce a standalone Siri app that borrows the conversational interface from ChatGPT and adds a privacy twist: your chats can auto-delete after 30 days, one year, or never, depending on your settings.

The report, published Sunday in Gurman’s Power On newsletter, says the new Siri will move beyond the microphone. Users can open a dedicated app that stores past conversations in a searchable grid, supports both voice and text input, handles file uploads, and returns web-sourced answers with images and bullet points. A new “Search or Ask” mode, triggered by swiping down from the top center of the screen, offers a quick entry point.

What happened

The centerpiece of the update is a standalone Siri application that Apple has never offered before. Instead of a voice overlay, users get a persistent chat interface similar to those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Conversations are retained in the app, and users can choose whether it opens to a history grid or a blank slate.

To address privacy concerns, Apple is embedding data-retention controls directly into the settings panel. Users can configure auto-deletion on a 30-day, one-year, or indefinite schedule—an approach borrowed from the Messages app. This is structurally different from competitors, which typically store histories by default and offer temporary incognito modes only as a manual opt-in.

Behind the scenes, the overhaul relies on external infrastructure.
